Unruly Natures

A research project about the relationship between people and baboons on the Cape Peninsula

How should we, as humans, act towards a nature that doesn’t always behave the way we expect it to?

Unruly Natures is a research project that seeks to understand what it is like to live in neighbourhoods that are regularly visited by baboons. It focuses on residents’ experiences and hopes to contribute to local efforts to minimise negative interactions. The term “unruly” is meant to highlight how the natural world, ecosystems, and species are often difficult to predict and control. This isn’t a positive or negative trait, but something that humans need to consider when interacting with the rest of nature.

The project is based at Stockholm University in Sweden. Read more about its aims and approach here.
