January is a busy month for the Unruly Natures team with important project milestones ahead. One of these was the first meeting of the project’s Advisory Board, set up to help the research take residents’ perspectives into account. The Board’s members all live in different baboon-visited areas across the Cape Peninsula, and were nominated by local residents’, ratepayers’, and homeowners’ organisations, ward councillors, various interest groups, and residents themselves.
The first meeting was an important opportunity for the research team and board members to get to know each other and agree on how to work together during the coming years. The rest of the meeting focused on presenting and discussing the survey that will be used for data collection. This input was very valuable for ensuring that the project can ask residents relevant questions – a critical step towards getting ready for the next stage of the project, during which we will test the survey in selected areas. This “pilot study” will take place between 30 January and 9 February. If you see us in your area, come and say hi!
